Star Trek: Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams sci-fi sequel, soared above Iron Man 3 to take the top spot at this weekend’s box office, with $70.6 million in earnings.

Though the film managed to rake in an impressive haul, it fell short of the expected $90 million projection despite being reinforced with several showings at IMAX 3-D theaters.  Abrams’ first Star Trek movie opened in early May of 2009 with an impressive $75.2 million on its first weekend without the benefit of 3-D surcharges. | Full Story

Iron-Man-3-Pearce-HR

The latest bit of Iron Man 3 promotional material showcases Guy Pearce’s character, who has been mostly out of the spotlight up til now. His poster features him dramatically removing his sunglasses, which may be dangerous, what with all those sparks flying about.

Pearce plays Aldrich Killian, a very minor character in the Extremis arc of the Iron Man comic, which the film’s story is partially based on. In the comic, Killian is a scientist who develops the eponymous Extremis, a nanotech serum, and then sells it to terrorists before killing himself out of guilt. | Full Story

Iron-Man-3-Falling-Poster

Marvel just let loose this teaser poster for Iron Man 3. It continues the trend of all the promotional materials for the film, which suggest that Tony Stark is facing his potential end. We’ve seen his Malibu mansion blown up, his iconic super-suits systematically destroyed, him be personally assaulted in his home, and much more. Now he’s crashing and burning on this poster. I like it – even if it does feature the too-overused “flying sparks and smoke” stuff, in this case it’s somewhat justified. | Full Story
