Even though the film cost only $15 million to make, it opened to a mediocre $7 million, which is considered a disappointing number.

The Possession, a Sam Raimi-produced horror movie, overperformed at the box office this weekend, setting the film up to capture one of the top Labor Day openings of all time.

The movie raked an estimated $17.7 million, making it the top grossing movie of the holiday. Lionsgate is expecting revenues to reach $21.3 million during the four-day opening. The superhero flick is on track to making $100 million for its second weekend out.  On Friday alone, the film raked in another $29 million, plus another $21 million overseas – upping the overall cumulative haul to $853.4 million.

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games banked a major $155 million this weekend, making this the biggest success ever for the independent film company. The film was projected to be number one in every market globally. In North America the movie began with $68 million on Friday, then $51 million on Saturday, and finishing off Sunday with a decent $36 million.

This makes The Hunger Games the 3rd highest grossing three-day weekend opening in history, following The Dark Knight ($158 million) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. | Full Story

Universal Pictures’ animated Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax fell to second place with $22.8 million, with a total gross of $158 million after three weekends.
