The Great Gatsby Review Round Up

The Great Gatsby poster

Although Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, is blowing up the box office on the weekend of its debut, the film critics just don’t seem to like the movie too much.

The film is the fourth big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, which follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he’s drawn into Jay Gatsby’s lavish circle of the super rich, all their excesses, and becomes a witness to obsession and tragedy. | Full Story

Movie Review: ‘Graceland’

graceland2

Graceland is a remarkably accomplished debut from writer/director Ron Morales. It’s a crime thriller that’s more than a little redolent of the early work of the Coen brothers, but is still completely its own thing. Out-of-the-gate arresting, fantastically acted, and unendingly emotionally intense, the film will likely go overlooked by all but a few devoted cinema buffs this year, which is a shame.

Marlon (Arnold Reyes), a valet for corrupt Filipino politician Changho (Menggie Cobarrubias), finds himself sliding into increasingly dire circumstances. | Full Story

Movie Review: Judd Apatow’s ‘This Is 40′

this-is-401

There are almost too many good movies in theaters right now. From Les Miserables to Django Unchained to Silver Linings Playbook and The Hobbit, there are enough blockbusters to make every avid movie goer happily break the bank and see them all in theaters. While many of these movies are drumming up Oscar buzz, they aren’t the only ones worth seeing this season. The coming of middle-age comedy, This Is 40, also hit theaters this holiday season, as a “sort of sequel” to Knocked Up from famed director/ writer, Judd Apatow. | Full Story

Movie Review: ‘Django Unchained’

django-unchained-movie-image-christoph-waltz-jamie-foxx

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has the feel of a “Western film” complete with gunslingers, bounty-hunters, horses, the music and a Damsel in Distress. However, even with all these themes, Tarantino reminds the audience that what we are watching, is very much a story about the horrors of slavery that occurred in the south during the mid-19th century.

At the top of the film, we find Dr. Schultz, a former German dentist turned bounty hunter (superbly played by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz), meets a shackled Django (Jamie Fox). | Full Story

‘Rise Of The Guardians’ Flops At Box Office, But Film Is Still Worth Seeing

rise-of-the-guardians-2012-wide

While DreamWork’s Rise of the Guardians certainly didn’t rise to the occassion in terms of box office numbers, the 3D animated flick didn’t disappoint based on its high Rotten Tomatoes rating. As Deadline.com told us, for whatever reason, Rise of the Guardian’s didn’t appeal to the mass numbers of movie go-ers this Thanksgiving weekend. Perhaps parents didn’t want to reinforce the existence of Santa or the Easter Bunny only to have the rug tragically pulled out from under their children later in life, or perhaps those families were Jewish. | Full Story

Movie Review: Looper Was A Shocking Surprise!

looper

It’s fair to say Looper wasn’t what I expected and I mean that in a good way. Sony very craftily left out an entire plot line in the Looper advertising, so the movie went in a completely different direction than I’d imagined. These days most movie surprises or plot twists are predictable and/or recycled from past successful movies, but Looper kept you guessing until the end.

I applaud Looper’s mastermind, Rian Johnson, and his ability to successfully articulate an original idea for a movie. So many of today’s films are remakes or sequels, I can’t help but wonder if Hollywood is running out of ideas. | Full Story
