Ben Wheatley and his team are among the most interesting fresh talents working today. The US is just now getting a taste of last year’s Sightseers, a strange tale about a boring couple on a boring vacation who begin killing people. Now there’s A Field in England, which is a bit of a departure from the Wheatley team’s previous efforts, being a black-and-white period film. But it still looks to be bleak, surreal, and violent, which is right in line with the rest of their work. | Full Story
If you were anticipating the return of Seth MacFarlane as host for the Academy Awards, I’m afraid I have some bad news.
MacFarlane will not reprise the host position at the Oscars this March. On Monday, The Family Guy creator broke the news via Twitter, tweeting, “Traumatized critics exhale: I’m unable to do the Oscars again. Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep” McFarlane added “However, I highly recommend the job, as Zadan and Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business.”
MacFarlane was referring to Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced the show in February and will again do the job in 2014. | Full Story
This is another one of those movies I really wish I’d caught while I was at Sundance this year, when it was originally titled Toy’s House. This new trailer really sells the modern-day Stand By Me, truth-of-adolescence vibe that it seems to be going for. Plus, Nick Offerman deadpanning is always nice.

The court of Henry VIII meets a galaxy far, far away. Latino Review has the scoop that Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been approached for a role in the upcoming Star Wars movie. Generally, such rumors are unreliable, except this guy seems to never ever be wrong about this sort of thing (he had it that Harrison Ford was coming back before anyone else, if you’ll remember).

Star Trek: Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams sci-fi sequel, soared above Iron Man 3 to take the top spot at this weekend’s box office, with $70.6 million in earnings.
Though the film managed to rake in an impressive haul, it fell short of the expected $90 million projection despite being reinforced with several showings at IMAX 3-D theaters. Abrams’ first Star Trek movie opened in early May of 2009 with an impressive $75.2 million on its first weekend without the benefit of 3-D surcharges. | Full Story
It appears Jay-Z, Will and Jada Smith are planning to take some creative liberties with their Annie remake film. In fact, it may not be called “Annie” at all.
The upcoming film, stars the awarding-winning actors Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx. Recently it was announced Foxx would play a variation of the original character Daddy Warbucks who will be called Benjamin Stacks in the remake.
According to the union casting notice obtained by the good people over at Playbill.com, many of the other character’s names will also be changed, including the title character. | Full Story

Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Okay, so I had absolutely no idea up until now that this movie was happening. Yes, yes, shame on me, it’s gonna be at Cannes and James Franco is directing it. First: a lot of movies show up at Cannes with little fanfare. Second: James Franco has his fingers in so many movie pies that it’s difficult to keep track of what he’s doing. And yes, that phrase should induce dirty images in your head, since more than one of Franco’s projects deal with pornography. | Full Story
Although Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, is blowing up the box office on the weekend of its debut, the film critics just don’t seem to like the movie too much.
The film is the fourth big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, which follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he’s drawn into Jay Gatsby’s lavish circle of the super rich, all their excesses, and becomes a witness to obsession and tragedy. | Full Story
